Vegan Hair, Skin, and Nails Vitamins Without Gelatin

growing long hair

You could have thick beautiful hair, glowing skin, and strong nails, but only if you supply your body with all the essential vitamins it needs to support growth and health. The problem for many people, especially vegetarians and vegans is that they tend to miss out on crucial nutrients.

The appearance of your skin and hair can really say a lot about your health. When you’re deficient in key vitamins, your hair can start to fall out and your skin becomes dull and dry.

Unfortunately, this is a problem many vegans face because of lack of knowledge of complacency when it comes to choosing the right foods and supplements. But one of the most popular vegan hair, skin and nail supplement is by HairAnew. You can check it out here (link to Amazon).

When I started a vegan diet, my hair started to look much healthier and thicker than it had ever been. My skin also started to look younger and clearer, and I felt great! I would often get random compliments when just out and about doing my own thing.

However, after many years on the diet, I made some mistakes that lead to deficiencies which caused some hair thinning and a reappearance of acne!

Now that I’ve corrected these mistakes and my hair grew back super thick again and my skin and complexion cleared up.

I want to make sure that don’t make these mistakes which are so common and easy to make. Taking a supplement to prevent deficiencies is the easiest way to give you some assurance that you’re getting vital nutrients you need.

Supplement without gelatin

Below are three supplements which provide many of the nutrients required for amazing skin, hair, and nails.

    1. Garden of Life – Skin, Hair, Nails supplement derived from entirely natural and organic ingredients. Designed for vegans and provides many powerful antioxidants to improve skin health.
    2. HairAnew – One of the most popular supplements for hair growth. A well-rounded supplement containing high doses of biotin, silica, and zinc.
    3. Vegan gummy bears – A tasty way to improve hair growth. Inexpensive hair supplement for those on a budget.
    4. B12 and Vitamin D3 – A good complimentary supplement if you choose to buy Garden of Life or HairAnew and you don’t already take a D3 and B12 supplement.

What is Gelatin?

Gelatin is primarily made out of boiled skin, tendons, ligaments, and bones from cows or pigs. Kinda gross right?

It acts as a thickener for many types of products you’ll find whether it be cosmetics, foods or supplements. It’s just about everywhere and can be difficult to avoid.

Gelatin is neither vegetarian nor vegan and therefore we have to find supplements which do not contain it.

Fortunately, in recent years due to popular demand, many companies are now opting for other ingredients instead of gelatin.

How to choose the best supplement

Read the labels – Reading the labels is very important because many times I’ve come across supplements which can be misleading.

Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D3 – Both are important for hair growth and should be taken by all vegans and many vegetarians.

Biotin –  Can cause some people to break out in acne, especially at very high doses (5000 mcg). Taking zinc with biotin will often prevent this from happening, so it’s best to find a supplement which contains a significant amount of zinc in the form of picolinate or gluconate.

Absorbable –  Finding high-quality supplements which contain the best forms of vitamins and nutrients is preferable.

Best Hair, Skin, and Nail Supplements (vegetarian & vegan-friendly)

Below are some of the most popular supplements available which are super popular with both vegetarians and vegans who want cruelty-free and ethically sourced supplements.

These supplements also have other ingredients which are beneficial to skin and hair growth like silica and biotin.

#1. Garden of Life – Vegan Hair, Skin and Nail Health – NO GELATIN

This supplement is completely natural and organic and developed by a company which produced high-quality supplements sourced from natural ingredients.

Not only does it contain many scientifically-backed ingredients to support collagen production like silica and biotin, but it also contains various polyphenols which protect against damage caused by the sun and environment.

These include ingredients such as green tea extract, pomegranate extract, and citrus bioflavonoids from organic food sources.

Main ingredients

Biotin – This supplement contains biotin from an organic food blend. It provides a reasonable dose of 2500 mcg, which is not quite as high as many supplements out there, but certainly more than enough to provide benefits for hair growth.

Silica –  Derived from organic bamboo extract, this supplement provides 10 mg of silica to help strengthen collagen

Vitamin C – Provides 30 mg of vitamin C derived from organic flood blend. Vitamin C is important for building collagen and keratin production.

Vitamin A –  As you can expect, because the ingredients in this supplement are completely natural, you get a large amount of beta-carotene. It’s a powerful antioxidant which is converted to vitamin A in the body.

Beta-carotene also helps reduce damage from the sun’s UV rays, improves complexion and gives your skin a glow.

Also contains Vitamin E, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, folate, pantothenic acid, zinc, selenium, manganese, and chromium.

They’ve also included several ingredients and polyphenols which have been shown to improve skin and hair health. These include green tea, pomegranate, citrus bioflavonoids, rooibos tea extract, organic bamboo, and organic turmeric root (50 mg).

I love Garden of Life supplements because they contain all-natural and organic ingredients which are vegan-friendly.

What you get with this supplement is a few key nutrients to support hair growth, but many powerful antioxidants which have beneficial effects on skin health in particular.

This supplement would be great for anyone who is looking to obtain great looking skin.

The supplement has very modest amounts of certain vitamins and minerals. If your diet is already quite healthy, then this supplement would be perfect for you.

If your diet is very restrictive and you’re super low in certain minerals like zinc, then I’d recommend going for another supplement like Hair Anew, which in my opinion would be better for hair growth.

Of course, you could always find a zinc gluconate or picolinate supplement and that would compliment this supplement very well.

The last downside is that this supplement doesn’t contain any B12. If you’re vegan, you should already be taking B12. Garden of Life has a B12 supplement, which many people combine with this one.

#2. Hair Anew – Skin, Hair and Nail Supplement – NO GELATIN

This is by far one of my favorite supplement because it contains many of the important ingredients you need for strong and fast hair growth.

It’s a super popular supplement for men and women who are looking to grow out their hair. Just check out all of the reviews this supplement has!

It was formulated to supply the all the right micronutrients which vegans will often be low in and be a cause of hair loss.

However, it’s not perfect and it’s best combined with a complementary supplement B12+Vitamin D3.

Main ingredients

Vitamin C – No hair, skin and nail supplement would be complete without vitamin C in the form of ascorbic acid. Vitamin C is crucial for collagen synthesis and thus provides the building blocks for good skin and hair growth.

Vitamin E –  The supplement also Vitamin E which is a powerful antioxidant and supports a healthy immune system, reduces free radicals which can damage skin and hair. Vitamin E has been shown to improve skin radiance and reduce skin redness and spots.

Niacin (B3) – Niacin is taken orally and applied topically may help reduce hair loss according to research. It helps to improve blood flow to the scalp and skin as well as reduce DNA damage.

Biotin Biotin is one of the most popular supplements to support hair and nail growth. Many people who try it swear by it and it’s one of the most recommended supplements to take.

Zinc –  One of the great things about this supplement is that it contains a highly absorbable form of zinc. When people take high doses of biotin, it can sometimes cause breakouts. The inclusion of Zinc is able to help counteract this effect by reducing oil produced in the skin. Zinc also blocks DHT, which is a cause of hair loss in men.

Also contains: Aside from those five vitamins and minerals, HairAnew also contains other ingredients like bamboo extract, which contains silica and is crucial for strong hair, skin, and nails.

The supplement also contains Ginko Biloba, a powerful herb which helps boost blood flow to the skin and hair, thus promoting the delivery of oxygen and nutrients.

The supplement is a well-rounded supplement which contains most of the nutrients needed for strong hair and glowing skin. I like that it also contains a few extras in there such as Ginkgo Biloba, Silica, and inositol.

Many people have claimed to have had a lot of success using this supplement. I highly recommend checking out the reviews (see the link below).

It’s also free from many troublesome ingredients like gluten, soy, wheat, GMO ingredients.

Great supplement for hair growth.

Although this one can be easily fixed by taking an additional supplement, it would have been great if they had included vitamin D3 (sourced from lichen) and Vitamin B12 (common deficiency in vegans).

Aside from these two negatives, I can’t really say anything else that’s bad about it.

See more information and current price.

#3 Hair Gummy Bear Vitamins – NO GELATIN

Last but definitely not least is a supplement designed for vegans to supply essential vitamins and minerals required for healthy hair growth.

Out of the three supplements listed here, I feel this one is more complete and is a great option for vegans who are not taking any additional supplements.

And this one is great for people who hate taking pills. You get 30 tasty gummy-bears, providing vitamins and minerals.

Main ingredients

Biotin –  Contains 5000 mcg of biotin, which is double the amount you get in the garden of life supplement.

Vitamin D3 – Contains 400 IU of D3. Although the supplement is labeled vegan, it’s not clear whether or not the D3 is provided from lichen or sheep’s wool.

Vitamin B12 – Contains 100% of your B12 needs in the form of cyanocobalamin.

Zinc gluconate – Contains 2.7 mg (18%) of your zinc requirement.

Also contains: Vitamin A (retinyl acetate), Vitamin C, Vitamin E, B6, Folic acid, Vitmain B5, Choline, Iodine, Inositol.

The supplement is simple but one of the biggest advantages over the previous two is that it provides both vitamin B12 and Vitamin D3. Since the supplement is aimed at vegans, I can see why these two have been included.

The supplement is also relatively inexpensive and so it’s a great value for people who are on a budget.

If you’re not taking a B12 and D3 supplement, I recommend this one.

There really aren’t too many negatives about this supplement other than it’s very basic and doesn’t provide all the extras like the previous ones.

However, I would caution people about taking such as a high dose of Biotin because it can cause breakouts, especially if you’re prone to acne.

This can be countered by taking zinc, but the supplement only contains 18% of your RDI. Therefore it might be advisable to either take half a dose (1 gummy per day) or take zinc separately.

How long before you see improvements?

Hair grows quite slowly at around 0.5 inches per month, and it goes into resting phase for a few months before it starts growing again. Therefore, you can expect to see improvements over a period of months (at minimum) rather than weeks.

You may start to notice improvements in your skin and nails within a month or two after starting the supplement. You can see how thick my hair growth was on the in my second year of being vegan. 🙂

What Is The Best DIM Supplement Without Soy

Diindolylmethane or otherwise known as DIM is a compound which is formed in the body when you consume cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, kale, and brussel sprouts. DIM has been studied for its numerous health benefits and hormone-balancing effects in the body.

Now, if you’re searching for a DIM supplement, I’d imagine you probably know a little about this amazing compound and what it could do for you.

Before I share a few DIM supplements without soy, I’d like to talk a little about the health benefits because there has been years of research on this compound and has some very important benefits you should know about.

Health Benefits of DIM

diindolylmethane benefits

DIM appears to have multiple biological activities whereby it improves human health, and research over the last few years have confirmed why we should all be eating more cruciferous vegetables or taking a DIM supplement.

The main reasons for getting more DIM include the following

  • Fights cancer – It may protect against hormone-dependent cancers by impacting estrogen metabolism in a positive way.
  • Potent anti-viral – Appears to have significant anti-viral effects against the HPV virus and may help women with cervical dysplasia.
  • Increase bone mass – Studies show that DIM may help increase bone mass by suppressing bone reabsorption.
  • Boost immune system – Has been shown to elevate immune cells involved in the killing of virally infected cells and cancer cells.
  • Balances out hormones – Helps remove harmful xenoestrogens from the body and maintain a normal level of good estrogen as well as free testosterone in men.
  • Potent anti-inflammatory – Able to suppress the release of several pro-inflammatory cytokines which lead to chronic inflammation in the body.
  • Improve acne – Due to its hormone balancing effects, DIM may help improve acne. However, most of this evidence is anecdotal (see
  • Prostate diseases –  According to research, DIM may be beneficial for men with BPH, which is enlargement of the prostate.

Choosing a DIM supplement which is Soy Free

When you’re trying to balance out your hormones, it’s not unusual to also want a supplement that doesn’t contain any soy.

One of the reasons for this is the controversy around soy and its effect on hormones in both men and women. And of course, it also contains phytoestrogens which do have biological effects in the body.

So now let’s take a look a 3 good DIM supplements which have no soy in them.

#1. DIM Supplement with BioPerine – No Soy and Vegan-friendly

One of the most popular DIM supplements is from Smoky Mountain Naturals.

It was created for helping both men and women deal with hormone related issues by corrective estrogen dominance, which can lead to negative health effects.

For women: the supplement was designed to help with menopause symptoms and PCOS. And as a benefit of resolving hormone imbalance, helping women shift excess body fat.

For men: Men can benefit from taking this supplement because it helps block the enzyme which is responsible for the conversion of testosterone into estrogen. This can be a problem for aging men in particular.

It also helps boost testosterone naturally, and this, in turn, will help improve muscle mass, especially if combined with weight lifting exercise.

Acne fighter: Hormonal acne can affect both men and women, but DIM is able to balance out hormones and reduce oil production in the skin which leads to blocked pores and spots.

Features: This supplement contains 200 mg of DIM, which is as much as you’d get from eating around two pounds of cruciferous vegetables. To increase absorption, they’ve also added BioPerine, so you get more out of the supplement.

Another great benefit is that the supplement is cruelty-free, suitable for vegetarians and vegans, and doesn’t contain any gluten, dairy or soy.

They also have another supplement available which contains many other synergistic ingredients.

Contains: 200 mg Diindolylmethane .

See reviews and current price.

#2. JAZZEE Naturals DIM Supplement with Bioperine  – No Soy and Vegan-friendly

If you’re on a budget and want something which will last you a long time, then this supplement is good value. You get 120 capsules per bottle which will last you 4 months.

They’ve kept the supplement pretty basic with just three main ingredients: DIM (250 mg), Broccoli extract (100 mg) and BioPerine (10mg) to help improve absorption.

Compared to the previous supplement it contains 4 x the Bioperine, further increasing the value because you’ll be able to absorb more Diindolylmethane.

It’s great they also added broccoli extract in the supplement because broccoli contains many other beneficial phytochemicals and nutrients which are beneficial to health.

This supplement is great for men and women who are looking for a high-quality DIM supplement to take.

Features: Jazzee Natural DIM has many good things about it. It is organically stabilized, meaning you get none of the chemical fillers and artificial ingredients. It’s also manufactured in an FDA certified facility, so you can expect good quality control.

The supplement is also good for people with common allergies because it’s free from gluten, soy, milk, eggs, fish and tree nuts.

Contains: 250 mg Diindolylmethane.

See reviews and current price.

#3. Optimal DIM Supplement for Estrogen Balance – No Soy and Vegan-friendly

A DIM supplement containing many other natural ingredients is what caught my eye. It contains several cruciferous vegetable extracts such as broccoli sprout, organic brussels sprout, organic kale leaf, and organic cauliflower head.

It also adds in its own proprietary absorption complex to help increase absorption of Diindolylmethane.

Optimal DIM was created to help people fight weight gain caused by hormone balance, hormonal acne, improve energy, and to improve estrogen metabolism in women and men.

You get 200 mg of DIM, which is comparable to the previous two supplements, but only two months supply.

What I really like about this supplement is that it contains organic and natural ingredients, and also goes for a more holistic approach by including several cruciferous vegetable extracts.

Features: contains a proprietary blend of ingredients to boost absorption in the stomach and therefore you get more for your money. It also made in a GMP facility and is 3rd party tested, so you know what you’re getting.

The supplement is also free from many problematic ingredients like dairy, wheat, nuts, soy, gelatin, eggs, and shellfish. And free from preservatives.

A great premium-grade supplement for everyone.

Contains: 200 mg Diindolylmethane.

See reviews and current price.

DIM Dosage Recommendations

DIM is generally safe to take and has been tested in clinical trials in humans for its effects on prevention and treating disease, as well as looking at any potential toxic effects

Doses of up to 300 mg appear to be safe according to some clinical trials [1]. Due to insufficient data on safety, it is not recommended that you take doses higher than 300 mg.

Diindolylmethane (DIM) is NOT recommended for children.

Bromelain Benefits for Skin Care

When you eat pineapples you’re also consuming a powerful enzyme known as bromelain. It’s assumed that this enzyme would not survive intact through the gut, but it does, and it’s absorbed by the body where it can do its magic in speeding up healing and improving your skin.

Pineapples are available all throughout the year, but I normally enjoy them in the summertime. I will either mix pineapple with other fruit or better throw some in a smoothie.

If you ever use pineapple in a smoothie, let the smoothie sit in the freezer after you bit! It’s tastes much better.

What is bromelain?

Bromelain is found in pineapples and part of a group of enzymes which can be found in pineapples and other fruits.

It has many effects such as being a potent anti-inflammatory, antithrombotic, and fibrinolytic. Studies have also shown that it is able to increase the absorption and effectiveness of natural compounds such as quercetin as well as antibiotics like doxycycline.

Several studies over the years have shown bromelains ability to help improve human health and fight against acute and chronic conditions.

One study has shown that 40% of bromelain ingested is absorbed from the intestine and retains its proteolytic activity in plasma and has a half-life of 6-9 hours. [1]

Studies have shown that bromelain is also extremely safe in humans when taken as a supplement.

pineapple contains enzymes which help skin inflammation

Bromelain has been clinically tested in many different areas of medicine such as:

  • Trauma
  • Orthopedics
  • Sports medicine
  • Dentistry
  • Plastic surgery
  • Hematology
  • Otolaryngology
  • Allergy/Immunology (bromelain helps reduce allergy symptoms)

Bromelain improves skin healing

As already mentioned, bromelain has significant anti-inflammatory effects and these have been documented in several clinical trials.

Bromelain is effective because of the following reasons:

  • Bromelain inhibits excessive inflammation and pro-inflammatory cytokines which may impair the healing process of the skin
  • Bromelain is able to reduce edema
  • Bromelain can improve the effectiveness of antibiotics and may be useful in improving recovery time and wound care
  • Bromelain is able to help improve debridement of wounds which have the necrotic tissue in infections and burns

The evidence

Although consuming bromelain either by eating pineapples or taking a supplement may benefit the skin, there is no better way to than to apply bromelain to the skin to deliver higher concentrations of the enzyme and to make it more effective.

Treatment of burns

Multiple studies have shown that proteolytic enzymes such as bromelain are able to significantly reduce the amount of time it takes for wounds to heal and close

In a study published in 2017, researchers took 26 subjects who were aged between 18 – 78 years and had suffered from facial burns.

Enzymatic debridement resulted in a much faster healing time compared to the group that used standard treatment.

The group who received bromelain treatment had their wounds close in 19 days compared to 42 days for the standard surgical debridement. Scar quality was also superior by the end of 12 months in the bromelain group.

In an earlier study published in 2014, researchers used bromelain for debridement of deep wounds. As with the previous study I mentioned, they showed significant results for the treatment group.

NXB cream, which contained bromelain, reduced the time to complete debridement. The results were 2.2 days for treatment vs 8.7 days for standard treatment.

The need for surgery was also much less at 24.5% for the bromelain group and 70% for standard treatment.

Plastic and facial reconstructive surgery

If you’re choosing to have a facelift or you need to get surgery on your face, you probably want the redness, swelling, and discomfort to go away pretty quickly.

This time, a study used a supplement containing vitamin C, grapeseed extract, and bromelain to see if it could improve healing time in healthy patients who had reconstructive surgery.

Over a period of seven days, patients were given four capsules per day. Out of the twenty-two patients who completed the trials, seventeen of them responded to the supplement with improvements in healing.

The supplement containing bromelain helped speed up healing time by 17 percent.

The wounds showed less inflammation and less redness overall. You can check out the study here.

Skin diseases

Bromelain may be able to effectively treat some chronic skin conditions because of its anti-inflammatory, immune modulating effects, and anti-viral effects.

A skin condition called Pityriasis lichenoides chronica, which is characterized by small raised red spots or papules on the skin surface as well as significant scaling can be treated using bromelain.

In a study published in 2007, eight patients who had PLC were treated with bromelain for three months (40 mg, three times per day for 1 month) were all cured by taking bromelain.

How to use bromelain

As already mentioned, bromelain is effective when either taken as a supplement or applied directly to the skin.

There are many bromelain supplements to choose from at varying doses, these are usually measured in GDU (gelatin digesting units) per gram. Most supplements provide between 1000 to 3000 GDU.

Bromelain may also be included as an ingredient in face masks and facial cleansers. Here’s a vegan facial cleanser which contains both papaya and pineapple enzyme to help remove dead skin cells, reduce inflammation of the skin and provide a glowing complexion.

There are also many youtube videos showing how you can create your own pineapple face mask. Although this might be beneficial due to the vitamins, bromelain and other ingreidents in pineapple, the amount of bromelain that will be delivered to the skin will be minimal.

Natural enzymes found in fruits can be useful as an adjunctive treatment with medical treatment or even be useful by itself in some cases. Bromelain has many beneficial effects which go beyond its ability to improve skin wound healing. It certainly deserves more recognition for its healing properties.

How To Moisturize Your Skin From The Inside Out

I’m a fan of skin products, but I know from experience that good skin health starts from the inside first. The foods we put into our mouth can really have a drastic impact on the way we look and how soft and moisturized the skin feels.

Having dry skin can cause all sorts of problems like redness, itching, flaking and even accelerate the rate at which the skin ages.

Rather than simply slathering on the moisturizer multiple times every day, how about helping your body produce more natural oils and increasing skin lipids to keep the skin well hydrated and moisturized.

So what’s a simple way to improve skin moisture?

A plant-based diet rich in foods like avocados, kale, sweet potatoes, soy, cocoa, walnuts can really help moisturize the skin from the inside to create a glowing complexion.

Causes of dry skin

Rather than simply trying to cover up a symptom, it would be better to deal with the underlying issue which is causing the skin to become dry in the first place.

In some cases, the fix might be simply correcting a deficiency in a mineral or a vitamin, but in other cases, the problem might be a bit more complex so you will need to take a more broad approach.

The main causes of skin dryness are the following:

  • Dehydration (you’re simply not drinking enough water)
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Mineral or vitamin deficiency
  • Low intake of omega 3 from the diet (especially important if you’re a vegetarian or vegan to choose the right foods or omega 3 supplements)
  • Low sex hormones
  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis
  • Genetics
  • Using harsh body washes or soap too often
  • Use of skincare products like retinol
  • Dry air
  • Intense exercise

Once you’ve identified the cause of dry skin, you can address those issues and then skin dryness may improve. However, there are always things we can do to boost our skin moisture levels by changing the foods we eat!

8 easy ways you can keep skin moisturized

Below are eight easy steps you can take to help keep your skin soft, moisturized and youthful.

1. Avocado

Avocado is mostly fat, but the good kind that you want in your diet. It is made up of primarily monounsaturated fats which are healthy for the heart and for your skin.

In fact, studies have shown that high intakes of monounsaturated fat in the diet has been linked with less skin wrinkling and aging.

Avocado also contains a fat called alpha-linolenic acid which is converted to omega 3 fatty acids in the body.

In both men and women (more so women), ALA can be converted into both EPA and DHA. It’s is EPA that is responsible for increased lipids in the skin which will help keep your skin soft, supple, and glowing!

2. Kale

Kale is a leafy green of the brassica family of vegetables and is a powerhouse when it comes to its nutritional profile.

It contains several carotenoids, one of being lutein (20 mg per cup). Studies have shown that lutein is a powerful antioxidant which is absorbed and accumulates in the skin where it can improve skin health.

In one study, researchers gave a lutein supplement to volunteers for 12 weeks and they measured various skin parameters.

The group who received the lutein has significantly less lipid peroxidation relative to the placebo group.

Skin lipids were also significantly increased by lutein. They saw a 46% in skin lipid levels from just oral lutein alone, but it was a 63% increase when combined with topical lutein.

There was a huge improvement in skin hydration of the lutein group by almost 60%. [1]

The subjects received just 10 mg of lutein per day to achieve these effects. So drinking a kale smoothie or adding some kale to your smoothies should be an easy way for you to improve skin moisture and hydration.

3. Okinawan purple sweet potato

For some people, purple sweet potatoes might be hard to come across, but if you have them at your local supermarket, then maybe you should give them a try.

Sweet potatoes are rich in antioxidants like beta-carotene, which help reduce immunosuppression, inflammation and skin dryness from UV rays exposure.

They also contain hyaluronic acid which is absorbed and distributed throughout the body, including the skin, where it can help boost water content and skin hydration.

If you can’t find purple sweet potatoes at the store, then regular sweet potatoes will also be fine.

It might be also worth checking out skin serums which contain hyaluronic acid.

4. Chocolate (cocoa)

How about some hot chocolate to help improve skin hydration?

Well, one study published in 2007 showed that regular consumption of flavanol-rich cocoa was able to significantly improve dermal blood flow, oxygen level, and skin hydration

The study also found that after 12 weeks there was increased protection against UV-induced erythema and skin roughness and scaling were significantly decreased. [2]

I don’t know about you, but I love hot chocolate! So I’m happy about this one.

5. Beans and Legumes

One cause of skin dryness is a zinc deficiency. You don’t have to have a frank deficiency of zinc to be affected by dry skin due to inadequate zinc intake.

Even having a mild deficiency can cause skin dryness, and people who are more likely to be affected are those on low-calorie diets, strict diets such as vegetarians or vegans.

Beans and legumes are one source of zinc, but one should aim for a variety of food high in zinc such as cashews, oats, and pumpkin seeds.

If you’re still not getting enough zinc, then I highly recommend people on a high plant-based and those who are vegan to supplement when necessary.

See my story on how I overcome zinc deficiency and how it affected my skin by going here.

6. Increased intake of water and low caffeine beverages

Who would have thought that by drinking more water, your skin would be better hydrated?

It’s not rocket science, but many people fail to drink enough water to be fully hydrated during the day. You should be drinking around 6-8 glasses of water a day or drinks which are low in caffeine or caffeine free.

To show that consuming extra water improves deep skin hydration, researchers looked at studies and found that people who consumed more water had increased deep skin hydration, especially if they had low water consumption initially [3].

Researchers noted improvements in skin softness, smoothness and skin moisture level.

Most of my water intake actually comes from green tea which is low in caffeine. Green tea also has beneficial polyphenols which also improve skin health and elasticity.

7. Soybeans

Many studies have shown that drinking soymilk or eating soy products can have beneficial effects on skin health and improve skin moisture levels in both premenopausal and postmenopausal women.

It’s thought that the reason for these improved in skin hydration is related to the phytoestrogens found in soy and also phosphatidylserine. [4]

Why not try using soy milk for some hot chocolate?

8. Cucumbers

Cucumbers contain a high amount of water and great to add to sandwiches, salads, vegan burgers, or whatever you like.

They are high in silica, which is important for skin health and keeping the skin looking young.

Cucumbers are great for your skin whether they are eaten or placed on the skin to help reduce puffiness and irritated skin.

How long will it take to see improvements?

The skin is always constantly regenerating, and much of this process takes place when we go to bed at night. Therefore it is crucial that you get enough sleep if you want your skin to look its best.

By making these changes to your diet and routine, you should start to notice improvements in skin hydration within 4 weeks, but you should give it at least 12 weeks or more to really see a positive effect.

Obviously, if you’re not drinking enough water, then simply hydrating yourself better by drinking more fluids will have a more immediate effect.

When it comes to improving skin moisture levels and skin lipids, this process can take a bit longer.

Over time, as your skin health improves, you may start seeing improvements in fine lines, skin elasticity. Your skin will start looking brighter, softer, and younger.

Improvements won’t happen overnight, but if you stay consistent and keep eating healthily, you’ll really begin to see skin improvements in no time at all.

Your skin may start to get a ‘golden glow’ if you consume enough carotenoids. This is perfectly normal and is a positive sign of health.

Leaving your skin dry can leave it prone to increased damage, infection, and even hasten skin aging. Having dry skin is also just not a great look.

By including these 7 things in your daily routine, you will help your skin become moisturized and soft. And as a result, you will stay looking younger for longer.

Best Inexpensive Vitamin C Serum

which is the cheapest vitamin c serum for face
90% of skin aging is from UV rays and 10% can be blamed on intrinsic aging. Vitamin C and other skin treatments can prevent and correct damage with consistent use.

When we are young we don’t pay too much attention to our skin because it’s generally quite flawless, plump and blemish free. As we enter our teen years, damage starts to accumulate, we start getting acne; and if that wasn’t bad enough, signs of sun damage starts to show with the development of fine lines, hyperpigmentation, and other skin abnormalities. Proper skin care is crucial for maintaining our skin as we age. There are many good inexpensive vitamin C serums available to choose from and should be a foundation of most people’s skincare routine.

Seoul Ceuticals is my favorite cheap vitamin C serum. It has a high concentration of vitamin C plus other ingredients such as vitamin E, Ferulic acid, and Hyaluronic acid – these all significantly enhance the effectiveness of the serum.

I’ve listed below four other vitamin C serums which give great results at a low and affordable cost.

These are some affordable vitamin C serums:

  1. Korean Seoul Ceuticals Vitamin C Serum (20% concentration) – Other ingredients include Vitamin E, Citrus Stem cells, Ferulic Acid, Hyaluronic Acid.
  2. Serumtologie Vitamin C Serum  (22% concentration) –  Other ingredients include Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin E, Ferulic Acid, Aloe Leaf, Jojoba and more.
  3. True Skin Naturals Vitamin C (20% concentration) – Other ingredients include Aloe leaf, MSM, Hyaluronic acid, Witch Hazel, Vitamin E, Organic jojoba oil.
  4. Vitamin C serum for Women (20% concentration) – Other ingredients include Aloe leaf, MSM, Hyaluronic acid, Jojoba oil, Vitamin E and more.

Fortunately, good skin care on the cheap is possible as there are many really good products to choose from that can be almost as effective as the high-end products.

One of the best inexpensive vitamin C serums I’ve come across is a Korean skincare product that is almost a copy of the more expensive and award-winning SkinCeuticals antioxidant serum.

Although, a 30 ml bottle does last about 6 months when stored in the refrigerator, and is clinically proven, so that’s good.

My friends always ask me which skincare products I use, and I tell them which ones, but they are a little on the expensive side.

The question I get asked a lot is: are there any cheaper alternatives?

For people on a budget, or perhaps want to use Vitamin C serum for other parts of the body and not just the face, using a more inexpensive serum could be a great choice.

I personally use Skinceutical products on my face and use the Korean Vitamin C serum on my neck, hands, and other areas.

I’ve used vitamin C Serums for over 8 years, and I could never do without them because they make a big difference in how my skin looks and feels. It’s really mas made a massive difference.

At 33 years old, most people I meet think I am still in college. I think diet and good skincare is the reason I’ve been able to stay young looking.

What’s the difference between budget and high-end Vitamin C serums?

The difference with the Korean Skincare product “Seoul Ceuticals” is that it uses an ingredient called sodium ascorbyl phosphate – which is a stabilized form of vitamin C.

Rather than recommending L-Ascorbic acid (AA) as the active ingredient, and possibly causing irritation, inflammation, and damage from poorly formulated serums, I thought I would be much better to recommend a cheaper alternative but with a stabilized form of vitamin C.

These skin serums which contain sodium ascorbyl phosphate are generally suitable for all skin types and should be a good start, especially if you’re just getting into developing your own skincare regimen.

Depending on the results you get, you could always try something more expensive later on.

Inexpensive Vitamin C Serums

Both Seoul Ceuticals and Serumtologie vitamin C serums have a lot of great reviews, which you should check out before buying (see below).

Both are super affordable serums for most people and contain ingredients which have proven clinical benefits for skin health.

I believe the foundation of everyone’s skin care regimen should be vitamin C.

Why Use a Vitamin C Serum?

Collagen is what keeps everything together! It is the foundation or matrix that keep holds the structure of the skin keeping it youthful. It provides firmness to the skin, which is gradually lost over decades of sun exposure, stress, and other insults from the environment. Vitamin C has been clinically proven to boost collagen synthesis for more younger looking skin even at just 5% concentration.

Vitamin C serums can be used as both a corrective and preventative treatment. Not only does it improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, but it can also help lighten hyperpigmentation and red marks, as well as improve skin tone overall. Vitamin C, unlike retinoids, is not harsh and there are little to no side effects.

Below I go into more detail about the main benefits of the daily use of a vitamin C serum.

Main Benefits of Using a Vitamin C Serum

There are many different benefits of using a vitamin C to protect and improve overall skin health and function. Below are some of the main benefits you’ll notice if you use a vitamin C serum every day.

Increased protection from sun damage.

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that soaks up reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can be very damaging to the collagen that keeps our skin together.

When we are exposed to UV rays, pollution, and other environmental factors, the level of reactive oxygen species increases in the skin, leading to mitochondrial damage and upregulation of enzymes which degrade our elastin and collagen.

Vitamin C serums have been shown to prevents dimer formation almost completely, thus lowering the risk of skin cancer.

When you combine a sunscreen with vitamin C, you have even greater protection from skin cancer and slower skin aging.

Vitamin C increases collagen synthesis in the skin and protects elastin

Vitamin C serums have been shown to affect the rate that we synthesis collagen in our skin. When we are young, collagen synthesis is at a high level, but as a person ages, the rate at which collagen is laid down is slower.

Not only that, the collagen tends to be laid down incorrectly and disorganized, which leads to the formation of the lines and wrinkles people see in their 20s and beyond.

By using a Vitamin C serum, you will protect the elastin that you have, so your skin will snap back into position more quickly, and keep your skin tight, while also improving collagen synthesis so fine lines and wrinkles are gradually filled in.

There are have been multiple long trials using vitamin C for treating fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation. These studies generally show a significant benefit after just 12 weeks. But improvements can continue up to a year and beyond.

The percentage of people who benefit from using vitamin C serums is thought to be about 80% in terms of increased collagen synthesis and objective improvement in lines and wrinkles. However, all people who use a vitamin C serum as a preventative should benefit from enhanced photoprotection of their skin.

By using a vitamin C serum, you will also decrease the degradation of collagen by MMP enzymes.

Reduces redness, inflammation, and other common skin complaints such as acne

Vitamin C is also great for people who have inflammatory skin conditions like acne. Vitamin C helps calm the skin, and improve overall skin redness over time. Vitamin C is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and helps give the skin a natural healthy glow.

Any time there is inflammation of the skin, there is the potential for damage. By limiting the inflammatory reaction to bacteria and other skin problems, you also reduce damage and prevent age-related skin problems.

Improves the healing capacity of the skin

As you get older, the healing capacity of the skin is greatly reduced. If you’re old enough, you’re probably aware that as a kid you would heal very fast from little cuts and wounds, but when you’re older this is no longer the case.

By using vitamin C serum on your face, the everyday damage that is inflicted on your skin will not only be reduced but also the rate at which skin repairs itself will be increased.

Prevents sun spots, hyperpigmentation and other skin discolorations

Every day living, just going out int he sun can cause things like liver spots or sun spots, hyperpigmentation from increased melanin production.

Vitamin C is able to decrease melanin production significantly, especially when combined with other ingredients such as ferulic acid and phloretin.

The main cause of much of the discoloration that people experience is either from acne or from the sun.

To get the biggest protection from skin discoloration while using a vitamin C serum, it is recommended that you also use a high SPF sunscreen as well, especially in the summer.

Helps reduce under eye puffiness and under eye circles

If you’re up all night and getting a bit older, you’ll start to notice that dark circles from under the eyes. Vitamin C can help by reducing inflammation, evening out skin tone and brightening up the skin.

Using vitamin C with a good  Eye Balm would be even more effective because the eye area tends to be drier and more easily damaged than the rest of the face.

The first signs of aging usually appear around the eyes, even as early as late teens and early 20s. So it’s important to use skin serums under the eye from an early age to prevent the development of fine lines, crows feet, and under-eye circles.

Your skin glows

Anyone who has ever used a good vitamin C serum before knows that one of the first benefits you see is glowing skin. This effect can appear even within a few days of using the serum, and you’ll never want to go back to not using it.

You’ll look younger for longer

All of the above benefits culminate into one thing: you’ll probably end up looking a lot younger than your age and staying that way for a longer time than you would have if you hadn’t been using vitamin C.

Deciding On Which Vitamin C Serum Is Best For You

Vitamin C in the form of L-Ascorbic acid is suitable for most skin types, but if your skin is very sensitive, then you might want to start at a low concentration serum or go for a serum containing Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate. However, most people will have no problems applying vitamin C (AA) up to a concentration of 20% or more.

The three vitamin C serums that I recommended in this article are suitable for all skin types, so it’s really up to you on which one you want to try first

If you’re not getting the results you want from a cheap vitamin C serum, then I would highly recommend trying higher-end products from Skinceuticals. These products have a lot of scientific data to back up their effectiveness compared to cheaper brands and ingredients.

The Added Ingredients Make Vitamin C Even More Powerful

As already mentioned, the addition of vitamin E, ferulic acid, and phloretin to vitamin C serums can significantly improve the efficacy of these skin serums in treating a wide range of skin problems. Below I will briefly touch on each ingredient that is included in some of the vitamin C serums that I recommend in this article.

Ferulic Acid

Ferulic acid is found in many different places, it’s an organic compound that is in the cell wall of plants. You can find ferulic acid in the seeds of certain fruits like apples and oranges. You can also find it in certain vegetables and nuts. By itself, it is a very effective antioxidant.

It helps improve vitamin C serums by stabilizing the vitamin C, but also has the power to preserve the integrity of our skin by mitigation radiation damage from the sun.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E in serums is an important addition for several reasons. One reason is that it helps keep the skin moisturized and helps prevent inflammation and free radical damage. Vitamin E also helps stabilize the vitamin C. Vitamin E also allows the serum to be spread across the skin better.

Vitamin C and Vitamin E also work synergistically through the donation of electrons, going through a process of “recycling” whereby Vitamin C donates an electron and causes vitamin E to become stable again.

Hyaluronic Acid

We naturally produce Hyaluronic acid, which basically allows us to hold more water in our skin making it look plumper. It has many benefits for improving the skin barrier as well as having a calming effect on the skin by reducing irritation from the environment. Hyaluronic acid also is good to reduce inflammation and improve the healing capacity of the skin.

Commonly Asked Questions About Vitamin C Serums

Below are some of the questions that I get when asked about the effects of using vitamin C serums.

Can vitamin C serum burn skin?

When applying vitamin c serum in the form of L-Ascorbic acid, you might notice a slight stinging sensation. This is completely normal and after a few applications, the effect usually goes away. This product contains sodium ascorbyl phosphate and so it is more gentle on the skin.

Does vitamin C serum lighten skin?

Vitamin C is known to inhibit an enzyme called tyrosinase, therefore it has the potential to lighten skin tone and lighten freckles and other marks on the skin. Please allow at least 3 months to see an effect.

Best time to use vitamin C serum?

Once you apply vitamin C it is absorbed and is effective for as many as three days. It acts as an antioxidant in the skin and mops up free radical damage, inhibits inflammation and increases collagen synthesis.

It also acts as a mild sunscreen by itself but is usually more effective when combined with other ingredients such as vitamin E and Ferulic Acid which the Seoul Ceuticals Korean Skin Care product contains.

Most people prefer to use vitamin C serum in the morning after washing.

Does vitamin C serum help acne?

Vitamin C serum can improve the healing time of acne marks as well as prevent acne from forming. Vitamin C can also help reduce any inflammation and reduce the severity of breakouts if they do occur. By itself, vitamin C serums are unlikely to cure acne but may mitigate the damage that acne can cause to the skin like hyperpigmentation and scarring.

You might also want to go with Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate instead of L-ascorbic acid, as this is less irritating on the skin, and has some clinical research on its positive effects in people who have acne.

How long to wait for results?

You should give it a few months to some improvement. Many people notice a glow the first time they use a vitamin C serum, and this can appear just days after using it. Over time you’ll gradually notice changes in how your skin looks and feels.

To see faster improvements, you can also make sure that you are protecting your skin in other ways like using a powerful sunscreen and also use a good moisturizer at night.

You also want to make sure that you are using the serum correctly. Below is a video on how to correctly apply a vitamin C serum.

Ways to improve results of using a vitamin C serum:

  • Use sunscreen every day and limit sun exposure
  • Make sure that the serum has not been oxidized (it’s not dark yellow)
  • Make sure that you apply the vitamin C every day
  • Make sure that you spread the serum evenly over the entire face, but avoiding the eyes

Note: Over time vitamin C will change color and will lose its potency. I have found that storing it in a cold place will slow down this oxidation process and it will barely change from the moment I open it to the last drop.

Won’t taking Vitamin C supplements help my skin?

Many people believe that taking vitamin C orally will help improve their skin, but unfortunately the concentration of vitamin C taken orally – even at high doses – will not reach the level necessary to help improve collagen synthesis or improve the skin in the same ways that applying a vitamin C serum directly to the skin would.

Will applying citrus fruits to my face help the same as a vitamin c serum?

Applying a citrus fruit to the face will not give you the same benefits as using a concentrated vitamin C serum that is specifically designed to penetrate into the dermal layer at effective concentrations. Also, applying citrus fruit can be generally irritating to the skin because of the pH level and other ingredients.

Can you use vitamin C after having laser treatment?

Vitamin C serums are suitable for people who’ve had laser treatment. Although you should always consult with your physician beforehand.

How To Use Vitamin C Serum On Your Face

To make vitamin C serum more effective you want to make sure that you wash your face and exfoliate occasionally to remove dead skin. You want to go from using the lightest product first, to the heaviest and thickest.

So after you clean your face with your cleanser, you should then use the dropper and use a small amount and rub in gently (see video below).

Wait until the product dries and then use a sunscreen for added photoprotection. The best results will be seen when you are also using sunscreen.

Skinceuticals Advanced Pigment Corrector Review

Review of Skinceuticals Advanced Pigment Corrector For Red Acne Marks and Hyperpigmentation

SkinCeuticals Advanced Pigment is an alternative corrective treatment for pigment problems of the skin. Over the years I have been looking desperately for something that didn’t irritate my skin and also removed some of the marks I had from having acne.

Acne marks and hyperpigmentation can take a serious amount of time to go away, and if you’re like me and want to speed up the process, you’re probably on what feels like an endless journey to find out how to lighten pimple marks quickly so you don’t have to always be conscious about the marks on your face. Having fair skin also just makes it so much worse!

I received a couple samples of Advanced Pigment Corrector by Skinceuticals and since I never had a negative reaction to the product, I decided to go ahead and purchase it. I’m normally quite cautious about what products I add to my skincare regimen, but this seemed to be a fine addition!

The ingredients of Skinceuticals Advanced Pigment Corrector:

  • Salicylic Acid – This ingredient helps exfoliate the skin and fades the dark spots that you already have and also clear the dead skin cells so other products and ingredients can penetrate and work better
  • Hydroxyphenoxy Propionic Acid – This ingredient is a non-toxic form of hydroquinone, which is popular for lightening skin, but can cause side effects and has even been banned in some countries. Hydroxyphenoxy Propionic acid prevents the transfer of melanin. Melanin is basically what causes the skin to become pigmented from sun exposure and damage. Studies on this ingredient have shown it to be equivalent to 2% Kojic Acid for removing hyperpigmentation.
  • Vitamin E –  Has a significant anti-inflammatory and moisturizing effect on the skin to keep it soft and young-looking. Also fights free radical damage, which is known to be a cause of skin aging. Especially effective when combined with vitamin C.
  • Ellagic Acid – An antioxidant which is found in many different fruits, vegetables, teas. Ellagic acid was included in the product to help reduce dark spots and discolorations of the skin.
  • Yeast Extract – Helps the skin in stopping future discoloration, as well as boosting skin’s immunity and improving collagen synthesis.

Applying SkinCeuticals Advanced Pigment Corrector

The product is white and has a very nice smell and good a good consistency to it. I use the advanced pigment corrector after applying CF + Phloretin product because it’s thicker and the thickest product should be applied last

What is good about the product?

  • It has a really nice smell
  • A little goes a long way
  • It doesn’t irritate my skin and doesn’t cause any breakouts
  • It contains yeast extract. This has been shown to be great for skin immunity, collagen synthesis, and also inhibits melanin
  • You don’t need to use it forever, you can use it to treat the problem and then continue to use your regular preventative products

What is bad about the product?

  • The price is quite expensive
  • Results come slow. It took me about 12 weeks before I started to notice a significant difference, but one year before I had noticed a real massive improvement in my overall skin condition.

Who should purchase this skin care product?

Advanced pigment corrector is a great product that you can add to your existing skincare regimen if you have any issues with any of the following:

  • Uneven skin tone
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from acne
  • Sunspots
  • Any other discoloration of the skin
  • If you want to lighten your skin

SkinCeuticals Advanced Pigment Corrector study results

In 2013, a paper was published which gave the results of a 12-week study using advanced pigment corrector.

41 subjects received the treatment and 41 patients got the placebo.

The results showed that tretinoin and advanced pigment corrector showed similar results in improving skin tone, decreasing the intensity of spots, decreasing pore size, and improving overall pigmentation of the skin. (study).

In 2015, another study showed similar results when combining the product with 0.0025 tretinoin.

Why did I use the product?

I had acne many years ago and was left with plenty red marks, lots of them in fact. For the most part, they went away after adopting a healthy lifestyle, but some stayed around for what seems like forever.

In fact, whenever I get a breakout, for whatever reason, I get marks left behind which can take weeks, months, or even years to go away.

Fortunately, breakouts are much less common these days than they were in the past. But it’s good to have handy because it dramatically speeds up healing time and also fades any marks that tend to be stubborn and don’t go away quickly.

If you’ve ever suffered from red marks due to acne, then you know just how frustrating it can be.

Advanced skin pigment corrector was a very good addition to my regular skincare routine.

Where to buy SkinCeuticals Advanced Pigment Corrector? sell their products directly from their website, but it tends to be more expensive. Skinceuticals were also acquired by L’oreal, one of the leading brands of anti-aging and corrective skincare products.

SkinCeuticals products are often used by dermatologists, so you will find them mostly in dermatology clinics.

These products are premium and can be a bit more expensive than the store brands. However, SkinCeuticals products are actually backed up by science, and that’s why I choose them over many other brands out there.

It’s been almost a decade now since I started using their product line, and I’ve had really good results. I doubt I will change to another skincare line any time soon!

Go here if you want to check out reviews and current price for Skinceuticals advanced pigment corrector.

I highly recommend the product if you currently have any skin discolorations that are quite stubborn and are not going away. And for those who don’t wish to try harsher treatments on the skin.

I still continue to use the product for over a year and a half now, and will likely continue to use it along with CF+Phloretin.

And lastly, if you’re interested, check out my comparison between two powerful antioxidant serums.
