Vegan Supplements For Joints

Snap, crackle, pop! This isn’t a sound you want to hear from your joints when you get out of bed in the morning or when you stand up sitting down for a period of time. These noises from your joints can indicate that something isn’t right, especially when it’s accompanied by inflammation and pain.

Vegan supplements designed to support joint health can help prevent and treat some of the common problems which cause pain by blocking inflammation, supporting collagen, and increasing lubrication.

As a person ages, joint pain becomes familiar to a lot of people. It’s the gradual wear and tear of the joints which makes them start to fail at some point.

Although it’s not inevitable: it’s possible to slow down this ‘wear and tear’ process and maintain healthy joints for longer by eating the right foods and taking supplements that support joint health.

If you’re between 20 or 30 years old, there’s a good chance that you’ve not really experienced these issues yet, but you should start to think about joint health now, so you can prevent any problems in the future.

There are many causes of joint pain: accidents, infections, and other trauma are just some of them. Generally speaking, the degenerative process that leads to arthritic joint pain can take place over decades.

As a vegan, you’re probably a bit lighter than the average person, so you will probably have less inflammation going on and you’re probably not overweight either. However, you can go a bit further and take other preventative measures by using targeted supplements that are designed for protecting and healing joints.

What are the main causes of joint problems?

Joint problems can be caused by many things aside from aging.

  • Inflammation – Can be related to infection, trauma, autoimmunity or wear and tear.
  • Arthritis – Many types of arthritis can cause joint pain and lead to degeneration of joints over time.
  • Muscles – Your muscles might be weak or tight.
  • Tendons and ligaments – Sometimes these can become inflamed and cause problems around joints.
  • Damage – Damage to cartilage from an impact or some other cause can cause chronic pain, especially with movement.

Many of these have things in common, but the main one is inflammation.

Inflammation is something that is required in our body for repair and regeneration, but chronic inflammation is problematic and can worsen joint mobility.

A plant-based vegan diet already contains many anti-inflammatory foods, herbs, and teas to protect our joints, but sometimes it’s easier to be consistent by taking a supplement.

You will also get a larger dose of the bioactive compounds than you would from just consuming the food.

Main active ingredients included in these supplements

Ginger and turmeric – Contains compounds such as gingerols and curcuminoids which are able to suppress inflammation in the body by blocking cytokines and other inflammatory mediators, which cause excessive inflammation and destruction of tissue if left uncontrolled. Studies show that ginger and turmeric are effective for people who have arthritis and the results can be the same as taking a medication.

Omega 3 – Studies show that omega 3 is able to suppress inflammation and improve symptoms associated with arthritis. In one study, patients who took omega 3 had improvements with tender joints compared to a placebo group.

There was a 50% improvement seen in the omega 3 group (89% of patients) compared with just 50% improvement in the placebo group (13% of patients) over the course of the study.

Glucosamine – This supplement has been used by many people to help relieve their achy joints. A lot of people swear by it, but clinical studies have shown mixed results. One of the reasons for this is the preparation used in some studies.

In trials that used glucosamine sulfate, it was found to be effective at reducing joint pain and other symptoms of arthritis. While other preparations were not as effective in treating joint pain (see the study).

Conclusion

Joint pain affects millions of people and can be debilitating in some cases. Looking after our joints with good nutrition, supplementation, and proper exercise is important for keeping our joints flexible and healthy. But for many people, the damage is already done and they have to just manage the pain.

Vegan supplements for joint health that contain bioactive ingredients have been proven to effective in studies on various forms of arthritis. They are also helpful in reducing the damage from wear and tear as well as quelling inflammation.

  • Hi,

Why is Carageenan in the Omega 3 supplement? I have already read that this causes inflammation and shouldn’t be an ingredient in any products. The other products you mentioned sound great though. Is it possible to remove the Carageenan in the Omega 3 Supplement? If not, I won’t be able to take that product because I have digestive problems as well. I am warned as a pet parent to not give my dog or cats any pet foods that contain carageenan. This is something that should never be used on a regular basis for people either. I hope that the manufacturer of this product will consider taking this ingredient out of the Omega 3’s.

    • Hi Cindy, thanks for the comment!

I believe Omega 3 is often used as a preserving agent in dietary supplements and foods (it also helps thicken the product). More companies are actually starting to remove it from their products because there is some research to suggest that in some people it will worsen conditions like Crohn’s and colitis. I’ve personally not noticed an issue with it, but I try to avoid it where possible. But I think I will start to remove these products that contain the ingredient in the near future.

Here are omega 3 supplements which don’t contain carrageenan.

If you have any other questions, please let me know! 🙂
